Day 0: Train to Penzance and cycle to Land’s End

Eventful! 

The whole thing started with a bit of a wobble… said goodbye to Jules and then realised I’d left my most important bag (ID, cards, chargers) in the back of the car… poor Jules came back. 

Then I couldn’t find my wallet… but then found it (after calling Jules and she had pulled over and was looking for it in the car). What has she married?

Lovely 40mph headwinds then greeted my for my ride to Southampton station.. but made it and back on track! A leisurely six hour (!) train journey later… and I’m in Penzance. A lovely journey once we got to Cornwall as well. Views almost rivalling those of Yorkshire. 

The 10 mile journey to the Land’s End hostel wasn’t straightforward either. Took over an hour with mechanical and map problems. Firstly my gears didn’t shift properly (adjusting tension has fixed it I hope… though the rear mech is a bit loose I think). Then… no Google Maps (poor signal) so I went the wrong way! Quite a lot of hills later and I’m at the hostel. No food here though and, I think, no beer (whaaaah!). Full English at 7:30am though - cooked to order - and I’ll be off!

Day 12: Findhorn Viaduct to Lairg

What. A. Day!! If started off at the wild camping place after another poor night of sleep. It was better than the night before but was still not enough, and it also started raining during the night. As well as disturbing my sleep, I had to pack up with everything getting soaking wet. I was so tired. I had breakfast nearby and the tiredness really hit me even more. The packing up took ages (my dodgy back and hands aching from holding handlebars all day didn’t help), and I started riding really late again; probably gone 11:30am.  It ended up being an epic day in the end though!  On the road and heading North Firstly I rode to Inverness, where the rain started. I found a nice cafe with a rainbow flag proudly displayed on a decorative bike placed outside. It also didn’t serve milk, everything was plant based. Day 9: Moffat to Dunfermline

After a good night of sleep at the tremendous hostel (more like a nice small hotel), we started the day with a ‘Wee Breakfast’ at Cafe Ariete (something to do with a ram). This nice little cafe in Moffat served us eggs, toast, bacon, sausage… and tattie scones! All washed down with latte and orange juice. We agreed that we had fallen on our feet. We then hit the road knowing that most of the climbing was in the first 15 miles today. The roads weren’t steep, more like long drags. Eventually the bulk of the climbing was out of the way and everything pointed the same way; our road (quiet and presumably the old way of getting to  Edinburgh/Glasgow), the M74 (very busy), the railway line and also the Clyde river were side by side at one stage. Day 6: Nantwich to Garstang

Ok. That was an adventure… actually a bit too much of an adventure in the end, which I’ll get to. The off Things started well with one of my mum’s cooked breakfasts! I had a good night’s sleep in the campervan as well so was raring to go with a bit of light drizzle about as I set off. Then… Cheshire. Is a neighbour to my home county of Flintshire and I used to live here (in Chester), so I know it’s leafy and beautiful. The route was fantastic though - even better than I expected - initially through leafy country lanes,  t hen eventually beside rivers (the River Weaver Way is one of best things I’ve seen on her whole trip!). The river is spectacular and there are sections where you ride with beautiful rivers on both sides.  A minor issue here… a huge tree had snapped in the middle and blocked the route. Had never seen anything like it! I Had to lift the bike on to it and climb around the tree. I suspected it had recently happened - you’d expect warnings for something like that ...
